Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Real Carbon Clutch

Do your carbon fiber steering wheels keep the airbag?

Yes. Every carbon fiber steering wheel we sell is designed to retain full OEM airbag functionality. Our wheels use your factory airbag module and clock spring, so your SRS system works exactly as it did from the factory. You do not need to remove or disable your airbag. If you have questions about compatibility for your specific model, contact us before ordering.

How much does a carbon fiber steering wheel cost?

Our custom carbon fiber steering wheels range from approximately $500 to $1,500+ depending on the make, model, and trim level. Pricing reflects genuine hand-laid carbon fiber construction, OEM airbag retention, and model-specific fitment. We do not sell hydro-dipped or "carbon look" products — only real carbon fiber. For current pricing, browse our collections by make or contact us for a custom quote.

Is it legal to replace your steering wheel?

In most countries and U.S. states, replacing a steering wheel with an aftermarket unit is legal for street use, provided the airbag system remains functional and the wheel meets safety standards. Because our carbon fiber steering wheels retain the original airbag module, they are designed to keep your vehicle street-legal. We recommend checking local regulations if you are outside the U.S., and always have an experienced technician install any steering wheel replacement.

How do I know if a carbon fiber steering wheel is real carbon fiber?

Real carbon fiber has a consistent woven fiber pattern visible beneath the clear coat, is extremely lightweight, and feels rigid with no flex. Hydro-dipped or "carbon look" wheels are made from plastic or other materials printed with a carbon pattern — they are heavier, the pattern does not continue around edges, and the surface can peel over time. All Real Carbon Clutch products are genuine hand-laid carbon fiber verified by our quality team. See our full comparison guide: Real Carbon Fiber vs Hydro-Dipped Steering Wheel.

Will a carbon fiber steering wheel fit my car?

Our carbon fiber steering wheels are built model-specific for each vehicle. We manufacture wheels for BMW (E, F, and G-chassis), Porsche (991, 992, Cayenne, Panamera), Mercedes-Benz (C, E, S, G-class), Audi (A4, A5, S4, S5, RS models), Ferrari, Lamborghini, Dodge (Charger, Challenger), Ford Mustang, Honda, Chevrolet Corvette, and many more. If you don't see your model listed, contact us — we may have fitment available or can advise on compatibility.

What is a carbon fiber airbag cover?

A carbon fiber airbag cover (also called a steering wheel horn cover or airbag pad) replaces the plastic center of your factory steering wheel with real carbon fiber, giving you the carbon fiber look without replacing the entire wheel. It snaps into your existing steering wheel and keeps the airbag module intact. Browse our carbon fiber airbag covers for BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, and Dodge models.

How long does a carbon fiber steering wheel last?

A quality carbon fiber steering wheel is extremely durable and will outlast most vehicles under normal driving conditions. Carbon fiber itself does not degrade, fade, or corrode. The main wear point is the leather or Alcantara wrap on the grip section — with regular cleaning and conditioning, this can last 5–10+ years. We use premium-grade materials and a UV-resistant clear coat on all exposed carbon fiber surfaces.

How is a carbon fiber steering wheel installed?

Installation typically takes 1–2 hours and requires disconnecting the battery, removing the factory steering wheel (including the airbag clockspring), and mounting the new wheel. Basic hand tools are needed. We recommend having a professional technician handle installation since it involves the SRS airbag system. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our installation guide in the blog. Our team is also available to answer any fitment questions before you begin.

Do you offer a fitment guarantee?

Yes. All Real Carbon Clutch steering wheels are built to fit the specific year, make, and model listed on the product page. If there is a fitment issue due to an error on our end, we will make it right. Please verify your vehicle's steering wheel bolt pattern and spline count before ordering. When in doubt, message us your VIN and we will confirm compatibility before you purchase.

How do I care for and clean a carbon fiber steering wheel?

For the carbon fiber surfaces, use a damp microfiber cloth and a gentle interior cleaner — avoid harsh solvents or abrasives that can scratch the clear coat. For leather grip sections, use a pH-neutral leather cleaner followed by a conditioner every 3–6 months. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when parked, as heat can dry out leather over time. Do not use silicone-based protectants on the grip area as they can make the surface slippery.
