Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel for Ford Focus RS Mk3 & Ford Focus ST: Hub Fitment & Upgrade Guide

The Ford Focus RS Mk3 (2016–2018) is one of the most celebrated hot hatches of the modern era — a 350hp all-wheel-drive compact with Drift Mode, a Quaife mechanical rear differential, and a driver's car reputation that has only grown since production ended. The Focus ST (Mk3 and Mk4) is the high-volume performance variant with a passionate following of its own. A carbon fiber steering wheel upgrade delivers meaningful benefits to both platforms: sharper response from the FF/AWD chassis, reduced weight at the steering column, and a purposeful cockpit aesthetic that matches the RS badge's intentions. This guide covers hub fitment for Focus RS and ST, generation notes, and spec recommendations.

    Ford Focus RS Mk3 (2016–2018)

The Focus RS Mk3 uses Ford's C2 platform with an all-wheel-drive system and GKN-sourced rear drive unit. The steering is electric power-assisted (EPAS) — Ford's Torque Vectoring Control system integrates with the steering to deliver one of the most dynamic front-wheel-drive derivatives in any performance car. Key hub fitment notes:

    • Hub architecture: Ford C2 platform steering column with a modern SRS/clockspring system. Hub adapters specifically designed for the Focus RS Mk3 (2016–2018) are required — not interchangeable with Mk2 RS or standard Focus adapters.
    • Steering wheel controls: The Focus RS Mk3 factory wheel carries SYNC 3 controls and cruise control buttons on the spokes. These are lost when switching to an aftermarket wheel. The RS's drive modes (Normal, Sport, Track, Drift) can be accessed via the center console touchscreen independently of the factory wheel.
    • Drift Mode: For Drift Mode use specifically, a quick-release hub is very popular among Focus RS owners who use the car on track — it makes entry and exit easier when using harnesses, and the quick-release adds track-day legitimacy to the build.

    Ford Focus ST Mk3 (2012–2018) & Mk4 (2019+)

    • Mk3 ST (2012–2018): The 2.0T EcoBoost FWD hot hatch on the C346 platform. Hub adapters for Mk3 ST are widely available. The Mk3 ST's front-biased torque distribution rewards a smaller-diameter wheel for sharper initial steering response.
    • Mk4 ST (2019+): Updated C2 platform with revised column architecture. Hub adapters are Mk4-specific. The Mk4 ST with 2.3T EcoBoost and optional limited-slip differential is the most capable ST ever produced.

    Why Focus RS Owners Upgrade

The Focus RS is paradoxically both well-equipped from the factory and very upgrade-friendly. The factory wheel is functional but notably heavy for a car designed to be as light as possible (the RS has extensive weight reduction vs the standard Focus). A carbon fiber wheel upgrade sheds meaningful grams from a rotating component — in a 1,420kg car with 350hp and a rear torque-vectoring differential, every reduction in rotational inertia matters. RS owners frequently report improved steering precision and a more engaging feel after the upgrade, particularly in Track and Drift modes where steering feedback is most critical.

    Recommended Specs for Focus RS

    • Track/Drift Mode builds: 330mm flat-bottom, Alcantara grip, 70mm quick-release. The QR is essential for Focus RS track builds — Drift Mode at Anglesey or Bedford means you need every ergonomic advantage you can get.
    • Street/canyon builds: 340mm flat-bottom, Alcantara or leather grip. The EPAS handles the adjustment gracefully — the smaller diameter sharpens initial response without adding appreciable effort.
    • Focus ST (all gens): 340–350mm flat-bottom, Alcantara grip. A slightly larger diameter suits the ST's daily-driver brief while still improving over the factory wheel.

    Installation Overview

    1. Disconnect battery — wait 10 minutes for SRS capacitor discharge
    2. Remove factory airbag (Torx fasteners from rear of steering column)
    3. Disconnect airbag harness, steering controls connector, and horn lead from clockspring
    4. Mark 12 o'clock spline position before removing factory wheel
    5. Remove factory wheel (19mm socket, standard thread)
    6. Install Focus RS Mk3 or ST-specific hub adapter
    7. Install quick-release and aftermarket carbon wheel
    8. Connect horn button wiring
    9. Clear SRS fault and steering control fault codes via Ford IDS or compatible OBD-II scanner
