Carbon fiber airbag covers are one of the most underrated interior upgrades available. They install in minutes, require no tools, and don't interact with the airbag system at all — but they add the genuine carbon fiber aesthetic to the center of your steering wheel instantly. Here's everything you need to know before buying one.

What Is a Carbon Fiber Airbag Cover?

Your factory steering wheel has a center pad — the horn/airbag cover — that conceals the airbag module behind it. This center pad is what you see when you look at your steering wheel from the driver's seat. It's typically plastic, wrapped in leather, or covered in a decorative material that matches the rest of the interior.

A carbon fiber airbag cover is a direct-replacement cover for that factory center pad. It snaps onto the same mounting points, uses the same horn contact, and the airbag deploys through it exactly as the factory cover would. You're not touching the airbag module, the clock spring, or any wiring.

How to Install a Carbon Fiber Airbag Cover

Installation is genuinely simple and takes under 10 minutes for most vehicles:

    1. Disconnect your battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes (allows capacitor to discharge).
    2. Insert two flat-head screwdrivers or trim tools into the slots behind the steering wheel spokes to release the factory airbag cover clips.
    3. Gently pull the factory cover forward to release it — do not yank, there's a horn connector on the back.
    4. Disconnect the horn connector (it simply unplugs).
    5. Connect the horn connector to your new carbon fiber cover.
    6. Snap the new cover into the mounting clips until it clicks firmly into place.
    7. Reconnect your battery.

That's it. The airbag module itself is not touched at any point in this process. The carbon fiber cover is the same size and uses the same clips as the factory piece.

    Will the Airbag Still Work?

Yes — this is the most important question and the answer is straightforward. Our carbon fiber airbag covers are engineered to allow airbag deployment exactly as the factory cover does. The cover is scored with break lines in the same locations as the OEM piece, ensuring that if the airbag deploys, it pushes through the cover in the correct direction and force. The airbag sensor, clock spring, and all electrical connections remain completely untouched.

Carbon Fiber Airbag Cover vs. Full Steering Wheel Replacement

Which upgrade makes sense for you?

    • Choose a carbon fiber airbag cover if: You love the feel and function of your factory steering wheel but want to add carbon fiber aesthetics. You want the fastest and lowest-cost carbon fiber upgrade. You're not comfortable working around airbags and prefer a fully non-airbag-adjacent install.
    • Choose a full carbon fiber steering wheel if: You want the complete visual transformation — carbon fiber rim, spokes, and center. You want a slimmer rim profile or improved grip texture. You're doing a full interior build and want every element to be custom.

Many customers do both — starting with an airbag cover and later upgrading to the full wheel when they're ready for the next step.

    Real Carbon Fiber, Not Hydro-Dipped

All of our airbag covers use the same genuine aerospace-grade carbon fiber as our steering wheels — not hydro-dipped plastic, not vinyl wrap. The weave is consistent, the depth is real, and the finish lasts. A hydro-dipped airbag cover starts peeling within a year. Our covers don't peel — ever.
