Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel for the Lotus Elise: Less Weight, More Feel

by Carbon Clutch 10 Aug 2026 0 comments

Why Lotus Elise owners upgrade to carbon fiber steering wheels

Colin Chapman's 'simplify, then add lightness' is the Elise's entire identity, and a carbon fiber steering wheel is one of the few modifications that's philosophically pure Lotus: it removes grams from the highest point of the steering column while improving the driver interface. In a car under 2,000 pounds, small masses matter.

Elise interiors are also famously spartan — bare aluminum tub, thin seats — and the factory wheel's aging leather is often the shabbiest thing in an otherwise ageless cockpit. A carbon rebuild fits the car's engineering-as-aesthetic ethos better than any luxury retrim could.

Unassisted steering character and feedback

The Elise has no power steering at all — what your hands feel is the tire contact patch, undiluted. It is one of the last production cars with truly unassisted steering, and enthusiasts buy the car for exactly this.

That purity is why rim construction matters more here than in almost any other application: there is no assist system masking the wheel's own flex and padding. A rigid carbon hoop passes the Elise's celebrated feedback through with less loss than compressed foam and worn leather ever could.

OEM vs aftermarket carbon fiber options

Lotus offered no carbon wheel across S1, S2, or S3 production — the factory fitted small-diameter leather wheels, with Momo units in some markets and years. Parts support for originals is thin.

Aftermarket paths split by car: S1 and many S2 cars have no wheel airbag, opening the door to direct replacement carbon wheels on hub adapters, while airbag-equipped cars are best served by a rebuilt original core that keeps the bag functional. Both routes preserve the small diameter the Elise's quick unassisted rack demands.

Flat-bottom vs round profile in a minimalist cockpit

The Elise's tub makes entry famously acrobatic, and a flat-bottom rim genuinely helps — it adds swing-through clearance for your legs over the wide sill during the climb in and out.

Round-profile purists counter that hand-over-hand steering in an unassisted car benefits from a continuous rim, especially in low-speed maneuvering where the Elise's steering is heaviest. Both arguments are sound; track-day cars tend flat, touring cars tend round.

Material grades — 3K twill vs forged carbon

3K twill suits the Elise's era and the British lightweight tradition — it matches period carbon parts like airboxes and diffusers, and its precision echoes the car's extruded-aluminum honesty.

Forged carbon saves no additional weight but offers a distinctive look for modernized builds. In either grade, the full-carbon rim construction is where the weight saving over the leather-and-foam original comes from.

Installation and airbag/SRS compatibility

On non-airbag cars the swap is minutes of work: center fixing off, wheel off, new wheel on. On airbag-equipped S2 and S3 cars, standard SRS procedure applies — battery disconnect, discharge wait, bag transfer to the rebuilt core — with no warning lights afterward.

Either way the job is well within home-mechanic territory, in keeping with a car designed to be worked on with simple tools.

Carbon Clutch — premium carbon fiber for the Lotus Elise

Carbon Clutch offers Elise wheels in both formats — direct lightweight replacements for non-airbag cars and rebuilt-core builds for airbag cars — in twill or forged carbon with leather or Alcantara grips.
