The Chevrolet Camaro SS, ZL1, and 1LE represent American performance at its most focused — from the 455hp LT1 V8 in the SS to the supercharged 650hp LT4 in the ZL1, these cars combine raw power with increasingly sophisticated chassis technology. A carbon fiber steering wheel is one of the most transformative interior upgrades available: it strips mass from the most driver-connected component, sharpens feedback from Camaro's Magnetic Ride Control suspension, and elevates the interior beyond the standard American muscle car aesthetic. This guide covers Gen 5 and Gen 6 Camaro hub fitment, model-specific notes, and spec recommendations for street, track, and drag applications.
Hub Fitment by Generation
- Gen 5 Camaro (2010–2015): The modern Camaro revival built on the Zeta platform. The Gen 5 uses a GM-specific hub pattern with an SRS airbag system. Hub adapters are widely available for this generation. The SS (LS3/L99) and ZL1 (LSA supercharged, 580hp) share the same hub architecture. Paddle shifters on automatic Gen 5 cars are steering-column-mounted and are retained when replacing the wheel.
-
Gen 6 Camaro (2016–2024): The Alpha platform Camaro — lighter, smaller, and more driver-focused than Gen 5. The Gen 6 updated the steering column significantly with GM's new SRS architecture and added optional magnetic ride control and Brembo brakes. Hub adapters for Gen 6 are specific to the new platform. Key variants:
- SS (LT1, 455hp): The baseline V8 with hydraulic-assist steering — the best steering feel in the Gen 6 range. Particularly rewarding for the wheel upgrade.
- ZL1 (LT4 supercharged, 650hp): The performance pinnacle. Electric power steering. The ZL1's track capability makes it a natural candidate for the full cockpit upgrade including the steering wheel.
- ZL1 1LE (2017+): The most track-focused Camaro ever produced with Multimatic DSSV suspension. Standard equipment on 1LE builds in serious track day form includes aftermarket steering wheels.
- Track Edition (2019+): Based on the ZL1 1LE with additional track hardware. Same hub fitment as ZL1.
The Camaro SS Steering Advantage
The Gen 6 Camaro SS (2016+) is one of the few modern American performance cars to retain hydraulic power-assisted steering rather than switching to fully electric. This gives the SS one of the most praised steering feels in its competitive set — road texture, tire loading, and understeer onset all transmit through the column with clarity. Dropping from the large factory wheel to a 340mm carbon unit amplifies this communication meaningfully. Many Gen 6 SS owners describe the wheel upgrade as essential to fully appreciating the car's chassis capabilities.
ZL1 vs SS: Different Steering Systems
The Gen 6 ZL1 uses electric power steering (EPS) rather than the SS's hydraulic system — a concession to the cooling demands of the LT4 supercharger. The upgrade is therefore more about ergonomics and weight for ZL1 owners, while SS owners get the full dual benefit of reduced weight AND improved feedback. Both benefit from the reduced rotational inertia when making quick corrections during track driving.
Recommended Specs
- Gen 6 SS — track/canyon: 340–350mm flat-bottom, 3K twill gloss carbon, Alcantara grip. The hydraulic steering rewards a moderate size reduction without going too small — 340mm is the sweet spot.
- Gen 6 ZL1/ZL1 1LE — track day: 330–340mm flat-bottom, quick-release hub, Alcantara grip. The 1LE's DSSV suspension and massive aero make it a genuine race car for the road — the cockpit should match.
- Gen 5 ZL1 — drag/street: 340–350mm, round or flat-bottom, Alcantara. The Gen 5 ZL1's LSA supercharger and drag-strip heritage make a slightly larger diameter appropriate for the longer cockpit.
- All drag applications: Fixed hub (no quick-release), 350mm for maximum comfort during high-g launches, Alcantara grip for consistent feel during burnout and launch procedures.
Center Console and Infotainment Integration
Gen 6 Camaro SS and ZL1 have GM's Performance Data Recorder (PDR) and various driving mode controls accessible via the center console and infotainment screen. This means the loss of any steering wheel buttons is largely mitigated — mode changes, PDR recording, and performance data are all accessible without the factory wheel's controls.
Installation Overview
- Disconnect battery — wait 10 minutes for SRS discharge
- Remove factory airbag (T30 Torx bolts from rear of steering column)
- Disconnect airbag harness and horn lead from clockspring
- Mark 12 o'clock spline position before removal
- Remove factory wheel (24mm socket, standard thread)
