The differences that actually matter are: whether you have to ship your original wheel in, whether your airbag and buttons are retained, what materials are offered, what shipping costs, and whether financing is available.
The seven questions to ask any seller
1. Do I have to send in my original wheel?
This is the biggest practical difference between companies. Some builders require a core — you ship them your original wheel, they rebuild it, and they ship it back. Your car is undriveable or has a bare column for weeks.
Complete-wheel builders ship you a finished wheel built on their own core. You install it and keep your original, which matters if you ever sell the car or want to revert.
2. Does my airbag transfer?
It should. Your OEM airbag module must bolt into the new wheel using factory mounting points and the factory connector. Avoid anything requiring an aftermarket airbag or disabling the system. Full detail in our airbag and legality guide.
3. Do my buttons still work?
Ask specifically whether button modules transfer or are supplied.
4. Is it real carbon fiber?
Real hand-laid carbon has visible depth and the weave shifts as light moves. Hydro-dipped and vinyl-wrapped wheels print a carbon pattern onto plastic and look flat. Price is the tell: genuine carbon starts in the several-hundred-dollar range. See forged carbon vs 3K twill.
5. What materials and options are offered?
A genuinely custom wheel lets you choose the carbon finish (3K twill or forged, gloss or matte), the grip material (Alcantara, perforated leather or nappa leather), the stitching colour, and extras like LED shift lights. If the only choice is a model number, it is a stock part.
6. What does shipping actually cost?
Worth checking carefully if you are outside the continental US.
7. How do I pay?
Pay a 40% deposit today. The remaining 60% is due when your build is complete, before shipping. Pay in Full is also available. Not every builder offers either.
Red flags
- Immediate shipping on a custom wheel. Genuine custom builds take weeks. Fast shipping means pre-made stock.
- Airbag not addressed. Any seller vague about airbag transfer should be avoided.
- Permanent sale pricing. If every product has been discounted for months, that is the regular price with a line through it.
- No fitment confirmation. Trim levels vary enormously within a model. A builder who never confirms your exact vehicle is guessing.

- Is this 3K twill or forged carbon, and can I choose gloss or matte?
- What is the real build time, and what happens if it runs late?
- What does shipping cost to my country?
